Current Projects

Historically Newport in Bloom has identified and completed projects to improve the appearance of the town. More recently the focus has been on improving areas and handing them over to local residents to maintain, while offering regular assistance and advice where needed.

Sleek & Beautiful

Newport in Bloom is a voluntary, self-funding group which raises money for planting and equipment by holding various fund raising events throughout the year.

About Newport In Bloom

Who are we? What do we do?

Newport in Bloom is a group of volunteers of all ages who are committed to improving the appearance of their market town and generating a pride in the local community. The ability of residents to work together on communal projects around the town is a significant factor in developing a sense of community and pride across the generations.

Apart from working with local businesses, Newport Town Council and Telford & Wrekin to ensure that the High Street looks stunning - particularly during the summer months – Newport in Bloom volunteers turn out clear and maintain beds, planters and parkland areas, which would otherwise be neglected as a result of national cutbacks. On completion, some of these projects will be maintained by local residents, under the guidance of Newport in Bloom and with regular support from "Newport's Blooming Buddies", a small group of volunteers who meet on the first Monday morning of each month.

Our outdoor activities offer older members of the community an opportunity to exercise in the company of like minded people but we also involve our schools, youth groups and the local university students in weeding and planting, as well as our many fund raising activities. Recently we have been promoting interest among our youngest residents by helping them to build a bug hotel and plant bulbs. Further activities are planned for our Junior Bloomers.

As a voluntary organisation, fund raising is obviously of major importance and we hold fund raising events throughout the year to enable us to purchase blooms and bulbs for spring and summer planting. We aim to raise and spend in the region of £14,000 to achieve the stunning floral displays on the High Street each year.

Although our primary objective is to keep Newport blooming for its residents, the town has been successful in winning prestigious gold awards from the RHS Heart of England in Bloom judges since 2003 and will continue to enter this competition bi-annually. This result, plus the positive feedback that we receive from residents and Newport Town Council, serves to assure us that we are getting it right!

No particular skills are required for you to be made welcome - all that is needed is enthusiasm! Our volunteers only become involved in aspects which appeal to them and which they are physically able to undertake. As much, or as little, as often or infrequently as you wish. Please contact us if you feel that you would like to help – we would be delighted to hear from you.
